Stillwater Children's Museum Where Wonder Grows
Stillwater Children's Museum Last Day of March 2008 Newsletter
With our volunteers, we make a difference!

The tremendous growth and development of Stillwater Children's Museum over the past few years is largely due to the support of an amazing team of volunteers. We don't mind saying, our volunteers are fantastic! Just over the past two months, Stillwater Junior Service League members have volunteered approximately 40 hours to the Museum, helping to sort and stock materials for our Museum without Walls programs, and assisting with some large-scale mail-outs. We sincerely appreciate their help and continued involvement in Museum projects.

This past week, women of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority also assisted the Museum at our first-ever Volunteers and Supporters Recognition Reception, where we honored the hard work of our volunteers and the Museum's accomplishments over the past year. See a few pictures of the reception below. We'll be sending an eBlast in the next week to announce the honorees.

Volunteers are needed at the following upcoming special events:

  • Stillwater Home and Garden Show, April 5-6
  • Family Fun Fest, April 26
  • Journey Back in Time (a Museum Without Walls program), April-May

Contact Nita Buckner (nitabknr@hotmail.com) or Ruth Cavins (ruthc@brightok.net) for more information, or to volunteer. You can also volunteer online and find more information about volunteer opportunities at: http://www.stillwaterchildrensmuseum.org/volunteer.htm.

First-ever Volunteer and Supporters Recognition Event
Journey Back in Time is coming soon!

The Stillwater Children's Museum and Smart Start Payne County have teamed up again this year to present Journey Back in Time. This Museum Without Walls program will be offered to children and their grown-ups at the Smart Start Payne County Family Fun Fest on April 26, and at five elementary schools within Payne County over the coming months.

Utilizing six different learning centers complete with historical displays and hands-on exploration stations, Journey Back in Time transforms an ordinary room into a pioneer settlement. Participants will grind corn, roll bread dough, use a wringer washer to launder clothes, pan for gold, shave, comb wool, spin yarn, make a trade bead necklace, and play with toys from days long ago.

"I have been excited for days because I knew it would be fun and it was fun!," said Russell, a 2nd grade student from Cushing's Harmony Elementary after experiencing Journey Back In Time  last year.

Stocks and bonds make great donations!

A charitable gift of stocks or bonds to Stillwater Children's Museum provides a potential opportunity for tax savings while generously sharing with others. A gift of stock owned for more than one year might entitle you to a charitable deduction for the full market value at the time the gift is made. If the stock has appreciated, you also may avoid a capital gains tax on the appreciation. Check with your accountant or attorney for further clarification. In addition to helping the Museum, you may diversify away from low-basis, long-term holdings into other assets that will better suit your current needs. If you would like to discuss a gift of stocks or bonds to the Stillwater Children's Museum, please call Steve Norman with Edward Jones Investments at (405) 372-7437.
